Atomic Austria GmbH is a ski producer located in Altenmarkt, Salzburg, Austria. It is wholly owned by Finnish parent company Amer Sports, which also owns Wilson Sporting Goods, Suunto Oy, Salomon and Precor USA. Its products are sold worldwide. It has provided the skis for many professional skiers such as Hermann Maier and Bode Miller. Atomic is especially known for their racing skis, and many World Cup champions have used Atomic equipment. Recent winners on Atomic include Hermann Maier (in 2007 he changed to Head[1]), Benjamin Raich, Stephan Eberharter, and Aksel Lund Svindal. The powerhouse Austrian ski team has an especially close relationship with Atomic. Atomic skis became widely popular in the U.S. following the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, at which Bill Johnson won the gold medal in the Downhill on 225 cm Atomic "Red Sleds". In 1955 the company was founded by Alois Rohrmoser in Wagrain, Austria. He bought a wheelwright shop, and expanded its production to incude winter sports equipment, using local timber resources and a crew of four craftsmen. In addition to making wheels and sleds, by 1957, the company was making 2000 pairs of wood laminated skis. The following year, the company discontinued making wheels and sleds, and manufactured 5,000 pairs of hand-made wood laminate skis. By 1966, the company had added modern electronic controls and automatic presses, permitting improvements in quality and quantity, as well as advances such as a metal sandwich skis. Atomic's reputation spread when, in the 1968 Winter Olympics,Olga Pall won the women's downhill using Atomic Skis. In 1971, the company built a new factory in Altenmarkt . By 1985, the company had two factories, covering 4 acres, with 590 craftsmen making 720,000 pairs of skis, approximately 89% alpine, and 11% nordic. Approximately 120,000 pairs were sold in the US that year. The company was later bankrupted by Austrian union bank BAWAG and sold to Amer Sports.
David Jacobs, Spyder’s founder and chairman was born in Montreal, Canada, and began skiing at age 13. At 21, he won the Quebec Kandahar, and from 1957 through 1961 was a member of the Canadian National Ski Team. In 1957 he captured the title of Canadian Downhill Ski Champion, and was the top-ranked member of the Canadian FIS Team the following season. He was the first full-time head coach and program administrator for the Canadian National Ski Team from 1964 to 1966. In 1978, while Jacobs' sons were in the ski race circuit, he noted that there was only one brand of race sweaters available. He believed he could make a better product and sell it to the close-knit race community. This business, named David L Jacobs, Incorporated, began as a small mail order business in his Boulder, Colorado kitchen. After the successful introduction of race sweaters, Jacobs added ski pants to the catalog offering. One of the earliest creations was a navy blue racing pant with yellow striped pads extending from the knee to the hip. His son Billy mentioned that skiers were calling them “spider” pants, due to their spider leg-like appearance. Jacobs recognized this as an opportunity to have a powerful, lasting name and logo associated with his products, and renamed the company. A passionate sports car fan, he borrowed the spelling with a “y” from the Ferrari Spyder. The early mail order catalogs included race pants, padded sweaters, Vuarnet sunglasses, bent downhill poles and other racing accessories. For two years, Spyder operated out of Jacobs' kitchen. At the end of two years, sales were in the six figures and his kitchen was too crowded. To finance an expansion in 1980, Jacobs sold the brand to Boulder-based Hanson Industries, a ski boot manufacturer. Eighteen months later, he bought Spyder back before Hanson went bankrupt. In 1994 Jacobs was granted a patent on SpeedWyre, a technology that enhanced race suit performance. A “trip wire” formed by a narrow seam on the surface of the legs and arms streamlined the surrounding air flow, significantly reducing wind drag by up to 40% in laboratory tests. US Ski Team members wearing Spyder suits enhanced with SPEEDWYRE captured gold, bronze and fifth place in world championships over the next two years, including two World Downhill Championships by Hilary Lindh and Picabo Street. The FIS banned SpeedWyre in 1997, claiming that it gave skiers an unfair advantage. Spyder is an official supplier to the US Ski Team, a relationship begun in 1989. The Canadian Alpine Ski Team has been outfitted by Spyder since 2002, and the Jamaica Ski Team since 2009. Olympic podiums gave the brand worldwide presence. Diann Roffe-Steinrotter and Hillary Lindh scored silver in Albertville in 1992. In the 1994 Lillehammer Games, Tommy Moe, Picabo Street, and Roffe-Steinrotter each won gold; Moe and Street also won silver. Bode Miller took home two silver medals from Salt Lake City in 2002. At the 2006 Games in Turin, the Austrian and US Alpine teams collectively captured 16 medals, while Canadian Jennifer Heil won a gold in moguls. In the late-nineties, a new genre of skiing formed, named Freeski. In 1998 introduced the Kreitler line, eponymous for pro skier Kent Kreitler. That collection became Venom, a an apparel collection targeting features, functions, and fashion inherent to the mountain-based, adrenaline-driven freeski lifestyle. Spyder is the largest ski-specialty brand in the world. In 2004, Apax Partners, a global private equity group, acquired Spyder. Jacobs continues to direct the company as Chairman of the Board. Jake, his eldest son who penned our trademark spiderwebs, serves on Spyder’s board of directors. The company acquired Cloudveil Mountain Works in 2008. Founded in 1997, Cloudveil manufactures apparel for the outdoor, snowsports, fly fishing and casual apparel markets. Spyder recently opened a couple of stores around the world including the highest selling one in limerick, PA

Dainese (pronounced die-neh-zeh) is an Italian company founded in 1972 by its current President Lino Dainese. It specializes in protective wear for sports such as motorcycling, mountain biking and downhill skiing. It is known well in motorcycling circles, sponsoring current riders such as Valentino Rossi and Max Biaggi. Other users of Dainese wear comprise Giacomo Agostini, Barry Sheene and Kevin Schwantz, as well as Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond. Dainese offers both a 'off the shelf' and 'made to measure' service, therefore opening the brand to variety of types and price levels; it is generally regarded to be a premium quality product, with many of its 'leathers' being handmade and employing exotic materials, such as carbon fibre and titanium.
The North Face, Inc. is an outdoor product company specializing in outerwear, fleece, footwear, and equipment such as backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags. The clothing and equipment lines are catered towards wilderness chic, climbers, mountaineers, skiers, snowboarders, hikers, and endurance athletes. The company sponsors professional athletes from the worlds of running, climbing, skiing and snowboarding including David Carrier Porcheron and Johan Olofsson. The North Face brand was established in 1968 in San Francisco, California, when Douglas Tompkins and Dick "Hap" Klopp created an equipment retail store that eventually acquired the current name "The North Face".[citation needed] This name was chosen because the north face of a mountain in the northern hemisphere is generally the most difficult face to climb.[1] By the 1980s, skiwear was added to the line of products, and eventually camping equipment was added as well. The North Face is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the VF Corporation. Today, The North Face is based in San Leandro, California, near its corporate sibling, JanSport. JanSport is the world's largest backpack maker, and together, JanSport and The North Face manufacture nearly half of all small backpacks sold in the United States. The North Face's logo consists of a slightly skewed quarter-circle with two lines running within it. This image is an interpretation of Half Dome, a massive granitic monolith in Yosemite National Park,[3] viewed from the west, with the sheer north (or northwest) face of Half Dome to the left. The North Face maintains strong links with the outdoor community through its sponsored athlete program. Athletes such as Lizzy Hawker who recently won the Ultra Trail Tour du Mont Blanc have benefited greatly from the programme. In addition to selling through outdoor retailers, The North Face operates 34 retail locations in the United States (as of June, 2009), and additional retail locations can be found worldwide. Rise in popularity, counterfeiting, and theft. In the late 1990s and early 2000s with the rise of wilderness chic, The North Face became a well-known brand and its popularity, especially among youth and college students, increased substantially. An upper-end The North Face winter jacket currently costs about $500 USD. Due to the high demand for and the high prices of these products, a market developed for counterfeit (illegally replicated) The North Face goods. Sold on eBay or in other unregulated venues, counterfeits can usually be detected by their misplacement of logos and obvious inferiority of craftsmanship. In addition to this, many counterfeit The North Face products are not made of Gore-Tex or HyVent, despite being so marked. For the same reasons that The North Face products are counterfeited, they are also prime targets for theft. In early 2005, a group of teenagers from Washington D.C. were arrested on charges including the armed robbery of specifically The North Face jackets from randomly picked students on the street. Allegedly, the thieves would then resell the products for a substantially decreased price. The massive counterfeiting has prompted the creation of a website with information for consumers intending to purchase North Face items online in 2004. In August 2007, Businessweek interviewed the owner and featured the site in one of their articles.
Oakley was started by James Jannard in 1975 in his garage with an initial investment of $300. The name Oakley came from Jannard's dog, an English Setter. Jannard began by selling what he called 'The Oakley Grip' out of the back of his car at motocross events. His motorcycle grips were unlike other grips riders had seen at the time. The material used to make the grips was called "Unobtanium," a unique creation by Jannard that would get a tacky grip to it when it would become wet, rather than slipping out of the riders hand. Unobtanium is still used to make the earsocks on Oakley glasses, and many of the nose pieces. Although the grips were successful, brand recognition was limited as the grips were usually concealed by the riders' hands. In 1980, Jannard released a pair of goggles called the O-Frame. With the 'Oakley' logo present on the strap, onlookers began to recognize the brand. In 1984, Oakley introduced a pair of sunglasses called the Eyeshade, which were made of plastic and featured removable lenses. They were popularized by Tour de France winner Greg LeMond and other professional cyclists. Oakley continued to introduce new models of sunglasses, including the Blades, Razor Blades, Frogskins, and the Mumbos, which eventually evolved into the M-Frame series of glasses.Oakley signed a four-year agreement to manufacture eyewear designed by it and Fox Racing in September 2004. These products are sold as the Fox Eyewear brand. In 2006, Oakley acquired the Oliver Peoples group, a manufacturer of high-end fashion branded eyewear. On June 21, 2007, Italian group Luxottica announced a plan to merge with Oakley in a cash deal worth $2.1 billion, and the deal was completed on November 15, 2007. Oakley is now in the portfolio of Milan-based Luxottica group, along with other brands such as Ray-Ban, Persol, and Vogue. Materials , Oakley sunglasses comply with the ANSI Z87.1 requirements for impact and high impact protection. They feature Oakley’s High Definition Optics (HDO) which provides clarity whilst also protecting the eye. All Oakley glasses must pass two tests before being produced for sale. The first test consists of firing 1/4 inch steel ball at the eyewear at 102 mph(150 fps), the second test is dropping a 500 gram or 1.1 lb steel spike on the lens from 130 cm or 51 inches. In both cases the lens must not crack or shatter, or eject from the frame. Other , * Unobtainium is a hydrophillic rubber compound that has increased grip when wet with perspiration. The compound was first used for a motorcycle handgrip[5] and has also been used in the nose-pieces and ear-stems of their sunglasses since 1987[6] and in their watches since 2002. Popular culture Lists of miscellaneous information should be avoided. Please relocate any relevant information into appropriate sections or articles. (May 2009) . Oakley sunglasses routinely appear in popular movies (particularly action films), including the X-men series, Mission: Impossible 2, Blade 2, Black Hawk Down (although historically out of place), Spider-Man, and others. Rapper/Producer Lil' Jon is both an Oakley collector and a spokesperson/model for the company, and has several signature versions of Oakley eyewear. Poker player Phil Hellmuth is sponsored by Oakley. Oakley signed a deal with Ducati to produce a range of Ducati themed sunglasses and to sponsor the Ducati MotoGP and Superbike teams. Riders past and present such as Casey Stoner, Sete Gibernau and Loris Capirossi have had their own Oakley signature sunglasses. Oakley also sponsor MotoGP riders such as Nicky Hayden. Oakley also created a line of protective gloves and visors for ice hockey. Stars such as the Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin and former New York Rangers' forward Theoren Fleury wear the tinted Oakley aviator half-shield. Oakley also supports many racing drivers in different series. Including famous and successful drivers such as Tony Stewart who has his own limited edition set, Juan Pablo Montoya, Bobby Labonte and Gary Scelzi. Oakley maintains US Standard Issue, which provides US military and law enforcement eye protection at significantly reduced prices. Very popular amongst US combat troops, Oakley M Frame sunglasses are included as part of the US Army Approved Protective Eyewear List (APEL), and have been assigned an NSN number for ordering through military supply channels. Oakley is the sole company that has a lifetime deal with Lance Armstrong. In June 2007 Oakley created two special edition sunglasses, one the Radar, the other, the Flak Jacket, with "LIVESTRONG" laser-etched on the lens, as well as the iconic yellow color used to represent the Livestrong moniker on the earstems and Oakley logo. In 2008, this collaboration continues with the 2008-spec Straight Jacket, and features the word 'LIVESTRONG' laser-etched on the left lens while the temples and Oakley icon are yellow following the Livestrong Foundation's color. Two jets were painted in an Oakley paint scheme, both Bombardier Global Express jets belonging to Jim Jannard. Registration: NT2 and N701WH. T Pain is often seen wearing Oakleys, The front bumper of the Ferrari F430 Scuderia and the Ferrari 16M Scuderia bear similar resemblence to the style of the Oil Rig version. The grill design looks very similar. [edit] Counterfeit Oakleys. Oakley's sunglasses are often counterfeited and sold in markets around the world that cater to tourists and Internet buyers. Counterfeit Oakleys are often referred to as "Fauxkleys" (a portmanteau of faux and Oakleys) or "Jokeleys." Counterfeit Oakleys are occasionally referred to as Oakeys (pronounced: oak-E's), this is due to an inconsistency between the spelling of "Oakley," written on the bridge of genuine Oakleys, and the spelling of counterfeits. Other variants include the term Fakely's.

ANDORRA-GRANDVALIRA .

OPEN YOUR EYES TO ANDORRA WINTER PARADISE... SKY IN ANDORRA... RENT SKIS IN PIC NEGRE ANDORRA.Open your eyes to Andorra’s winter delights .  Richard Jones and his family find competitive prices, well groomed slopes and a party atmosphere in the snow-covered playground of the Pyrenees.
Published: 21/11/2009 .
MY YOUNG daughter’s eyes lit up with excitement and bewilderment – like her mum, she had never been on a winter holiday before and the sight of the snow-topped Pyrenees peaks had them both in awe.
We were on a coach in southern France en route to Andorra, where it turned out to be even colder than the bitter British winter we had left behind.
Once described as a cross between the mythical valley of Shangri-La and Heathrow airport’s duty-free malls, Andorra nestles in the Pyrenees between France and Spain.
It’s a tiny principality, but prosperous due to the nine million visitors who come each year for its majestic snow-topped peaks and tariff-free goods – not to mention its tax-haven status.
The resort of Pal-Arinsal has become one of the most popular in the region by offering the holy trinity to skiers: competitive prices, well groomed slopes and a party atmosphere.
When Rachel, two-year-old Isla and I arrived in the town, our first impression was a ski-ing nirvana with plenty of winter-sports shops and bars centred on the gondola.
Thanks to an abundance of snowfall, and snow cannons up top if needed, the slopes open earlier than usual each year, and the new Seturia cable-car system between Arinsal and Pal has created the largest ski-ing area in the Pyrenees at a whopping 140km.
Meanwhile, in the summer months, tourists can go walking, parasailing and go-carting. There’s also the Mountain Bike World Cup each May.
Our home for the week was the English-run aparthotel Sant Andreu, and the meal on the Sunday evening was a welcome roast buffet with a choice of beef, pork and grilled mackerel.
However, before that, we headed down to St Moritz ski-hire shop to pick up our boots, skis and poles. Or of course you can visit PIC NEGRE http://www.picnegre.com , 17 shops everywhere in Andorra to rent your skis ans snowboarding.  Also you can rent in http://www.alquileresquisandorra.com , 10% by Internet reservation.
Our Crystal rep, Sam, then handed out our lift passes and ski-school tokens, so by 7pm we were kitted out and ready for our first day’s ski-ing.
After breakfast the next morning, it was a five-minute walk down the hill to the gondola and up to Vallnord ski park.
Rachel and I were immediately impressed by the feeling of the Skippy Park creche adjacent to the slopes which cares for children from newborn up to those slightly older than Isla.
The place seemed very secure, and judging by Isla’s reaction to the plentiful Mickey Mouse toys, pushchairs and art boards, she was won over, too.
Mummy and daddy then joined ski-school groups which are specially tailored for British tourists.  As a “fresher” skier, Rachel and the other beginners started out on the “magic carpet” with instructor Clive and learned the usual first-day basics, including the snow plough, sliding and turning.
Meanwhile, I joined an intermediate group led by an Argentinean instructor called Andres who made it his goal to refine my parallel ski-ing technique over the next five days.
The school runs each day between 9.30am and noon, so in the afternoons, Rachel and I were able to practise on our own and spend some time together.
Plastic pull-along sledges can be hired from the ski-hire shop for three euros, and this proved to be a bargain as our adventurous daughter was in her element going up and down the small hills during lunchtime.
After a couple of misty days, the weather was much improved by Wednesday, and thanks to the crystal-clear blue skies and the bright sunshine, the views of the stunning Pyrenees made for our most enjoyable day of the holiday.
That evening, we had a couple of drinks during the hotel’s two-for-one happy hour while Isla played with other children before partaking in the typical Brit-abroad pastime of watching football on Sky Sports.
By the fifth day, the weather was very changeable again, with heavy sleet and snow interspersed by sunshine and mist.
Rachel had her first trip up the six-man chairlift in the morning and was shocked by the difference at the top.
The mountains at the Arinsal summit are hemmed in on either side by ridges, and at times, it seems like you are travelling down a long tunnel.
Moving further along to the slopes of Pal, things apparently get even more interesting.   The cable-car system provides advanced skiers with some pretty challenging red and black runs, and there’s also a short coach trip available to the legendary pistes of Arcalis.
Off the slopes, Thursday night is curry night at the San Andreu, so for an extra five euros each, guests can sample hotel chef Michael’s fresh, home-made Indian dishes and naan breads. Due to the onset of wet and windy weather, our end-of-week slalom time trials had to be cancelled, and after looking at the weather forecast, Rachel and I decided that Friday would be our final day of ski-ing.
That afternoon, although we were relieved to return our heavy equipment, there were lumps in our throats as our ski-ing adventure was at an end.
The Derby Irish bar is the local haunt of the Vallnord instructors, and on the Friday evening, the three of us popped down so that Clive and Andres could go through our techniques before presenting us with our ski-ing diplomas. You find also the Vallnord instructors in QUO VADIS PUB in ARINSAL, the owner, DANI is one of the best managers in Arinsal resort, always thinking about, wich is the best service English clients enjoy.
Later on that night, I ventured out to sample Arinsal’s night life, namely heavy drinking and bad dancing at El Cau’s weekly 1970s night.
Sam and the rest of the reps donned their Village People attire and took part in the traditional Full Monty at the end of the night, while I stumbled back to the San Andreu at 3am the worse for wear after a few too many San Miguels and shots.
On our final day, we took Isla on a bus trip to the town of Andorra La Vella, where we had a walk on the riverside, did some duty-free shopping in the dirt-cheap Hipa Andorra and had a spot of lunch in one of the tapas bars.
Andorra La Vella is also home to the Caldea complex, where visitors can relax in the many linked indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and Turkish baths, which have no doubt contributed to Andorrans’ life expectancy, being the highest on the planet at an incredible average of 83-and-a-half years.
The vicious storms in the area got so bad on the Saturday that the ski lifts closed at lunchtime.   However, thanks to a snow plough and a switch of departure airports from Toulouse across one border in France to Barcelona Girona over another in neighbouring Spain, the three of us left with a minimum of fuss.
Contrast this to the week after we arrived back home in late-January when the UK experienced its heaviest snow in almost two decades – only a dusting, really – which brought the country’s infrastructure to a shuddering halt.
If only the Andorran authorities had struggled in the same manner, we might have been “stranded” in Arinsal for a few more days. If only, indeed.

Dive Under The Ice At 2000m In Vallnord . 40 mins ago Alicia Taylor, Executive Editor, Europe     Comments (0)Scuba diving at 2000m in Vallnord Scuba diving at 2000m in Vallnord At A Glance.
Where: Arcalis, Andorra.
Info: More Information...
Scuba diving at more than 2000 metres altitude is the latest trend in Vallnord. The activity combines skiing down to a frozen lake or pool then scuba diving under the ice.
There are two options: a "baptism" for beginners and technical diving for qualified divers. Once the dive has finished, the descent continues through the mountains of Arcalis.
The diving baptisms are a 12-metre dive in La Canaleta pool (2060m) which is complete with an artificial dam to produce snow and ice. This dive is aimed at beginners over the age of 14 and lasts for 15 to 20 minutes and costs €75 per person.
This beginners' dive consists of a descent via a blue slope, wearing the special equipment provided by the organisation, and a submersion under the waters with the supervision of an instructor. The baptism can be done from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes materials and insurance.
The second option is aimed at qualified divers or people who have done a previous dive. This dive, which offers the chance to dive to 23 metres, is done in the Tristaina Lake (2305m). It lasts for 5.5 hours and takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m and costs €295.
The starting point is the La Coma Restaurant in the Arcalís sector and there are three ways to reach the lake: by helicopter, with snowshoes, or using a good off-piste track. A minimum of three people are needed to carryout the activity.
